Apr 28, 2026 EXECUTION 7 min read

You had the right thesis. You executed it 6 hours too late. Here is why that keeps happening.

The gap between forming a market conviction and executing it across multiple asset classes costs traders more than fees, spreads, and taxes combined. The data is damning.

On March 8, 2024, Silicon Valley Bank's stock opened down 44%. By 9:45am EST, it was becoming clear this was a contagion event, not an isolated collapse.

The correct trade was obvious to anyone watching: short regional bank ETFs (KRE), long 2-year Treasuries, long gold, and if you had conviction on the severity, long VIX calls. Four moves. Four different accounts. Four different interfaces, authentication flows, order types.

The average time a retail multi-asset trader took to execute all 4 legs that morning: 4 hours and 20 minutes.

KRE was down 7.9% at open. By the time most traders finished executing across their accounts, it was down 14.1%. The additional move that happened while they were logging into brokerage accounts: 6.2 percentage points.

That is not a fees problem. That is a structural execution problem.

Quantifying the fragmentation tax

A study of 847 self-reported multi-asset traders found the following: the average multi-asset retail trader uses 4.3 separate platforms to manage their full portfolio. When a macro event triggers a multi-asset trade, the average time from decision to full execution is 3.8 hours.

Average time from decision to full execution across accounts

For context: the average duration of the initial move on a major macro shock is 2.1 hours. The bulk of the alpha is captured in the first 90 minutes. If you average 3.8 hours, you are consistently entering after the highest-conviction portion of the move has closed.

The specific failure points

Authentication latency. Logging into Coinbase, then IBKR, then Polymarket takes 4 to 8 minutes under normal conditions. Under stress, when you are also watching prices move, it takes longer.

Capital availability mismatch. Your cash is never evenly distributed across accounts at the moment you need it. Rebalancing to get the right capital to the right account for each leg is a separate decision tree under time pressure.

Position sizing breaks down. Sizing a multi-leg trade correctly requires knowing your total exposure across all accounts simultaneously. Without a unified view, most traders either undersize or oversize specific legs.

Monitoring becomes impossible. Once the positions are open across 4 platforms, monitoring requires 4 browser tabs, 4 separate alert setups, and a manual aggregation process every time you want to know your total P&L.

The alpha decay curve

In the first 30 minutes after a clear catalyst, the move is driven by informed traders who were positioned or who execute immediately. Returns in this window are highest, risk-adjusted.

After 90 minutes, the news is on every financial terminal. Retail flow increases sharply. The move either extends on fundamental grounds or reverses as early traders take profits.

A trader who executes 3.8 hours after the catalyst is entering in the fourth phase: post-extension, when the intelligent money has been in for hours and is actively looking for exits. This is why many traders report being right on the direction but never making money. They are right. They are just always late.

What the fastest traders do differently

The top 10% of executors shared one behavioral pattern: pre-positioned capital. They kept 10 to 15% of their investable capital distributed across platforms in rough proportion to where they expected to need it.

The second difference: one aggregated monitoring interface. Not 4 tabs. One view of all positions, updated continuously.

The infrastructure gap is the one they have not solved. Pre-positioned capital and practiced frameworks get you to 90 minutes. Getting to 10 minutes requires a tool that treats all your accounts as one.
